We help you determine what’s right for you .
At United Firewood, we’re excited to kick off another cozy firewood season with you. We’re here not only to deliver top-quality seasoned hardwood, but also to help you make informed, confident choices for your home and hearth. As many of our new and returning customers ask about firewood measurements, we thought we’d clear up one of the most common questions: What’s the difference between a face cord and a full cord of firewood?
Read on to get all the details, so you’ll know exactly what to order for your fireside needs!
What Is a Full Cord?
A full cord is the standard measurement for firewood in the U.S. and Canada.
- Dimensions: 4 feet high x 4 feet wide x 8 feet long
- Volume: 128 cubic feet
- It’s stacked so each piece is usually about 16 inches long.

What Is a Face Cord?
A face cord is a smaller portion of a full cord.
- Dimensions: Same height and length as a full cord (4 feet high x 8 feet long), but the depth matches the length of cut firewood—often 16 inches.
- Volume: About 1/3 of a full cord
- Sometimes called a “rick,” a face cord is great for smaller spaces or supplementing your supply.

In simple terms:
- Full cord = 4 ft high x 4 ft wide x 8 ft long (128 cubic feet)
- Face cord = 4 ft high x 8 ft long x as deep as your firewood is cut (usually 16” deep)

Why Does This Matter?
Knowing these measurements helps you buy the right amount, avoid surprises, and keep your fires burning all season long!
- A face cord is great for weekend fires and moderate use.
- A full cord is ideal for steady home heating through the cold months.
At United Firewood, we typically sell firewood by the face cord—cut to convenient 16″ lengths for easy stacking and burning.
